Makerspace visits Immaculate Conception

On Monday April 4th, the FDK and Grade 1 classrooms at Immaculate Conception School in Val Caron welcomed into their classes the Greater Sudbury Public Library Makerspace Program. Mrs. Marcil, Mme Martin, MmeLafond and Mme Mundy have been integrating a variety of STEM activities to further promote student engagement. They explored Squishy Circuits and had the opportunity to collaborate with their peers while practicing problem solving and patterning. The students had so much fun and they look forward to welcoming the Makerspace Program again in the near future.

Immaculate Runs Fun Friends All Year Round

Thanks to our Immaculate Conception Catholic Elementary School’s Educational Assistant, Moira Swiatek, students in the primary and junior division enjoy the resiliency based program called “Fun Friends.” In their groups, they discuss feelings & emotions, red & green thoughts and how to change the red thoughts into green or positive thoughts. The children also learn relaxation strategies to calm their bodies down. One of their favourite activities is called the “milkshake” breathing technique where students inhale a large breath and exhale through a straw into a cup of chocolate milk which then produces bubbles. Fun Friends is a safe environment where students can learn to be courageous and make life long friends.

Immaculate Loves Literacy Day!

Immaculate Conception Catholic Elementary School family members were invited to participate in Family Literacy Day on January 27th with their children. All enjoyed playing a variety of literacy games and activities. Immaculate student Alyssa Williams and her Mom had fun using the ipad to create different posters.

Errol Lee Visits Immaculate During Bullying Awareness Week

Singer, dancer and motivational speaker Errol Lee rocked the Immaculate Conception Catholic Elementary School gymnasium with a concert entitled “The Golden Rule” and “Cool to be Kind”. Students enjoyed the rapper’s message of demonstrating Catholic virtues through their interactions with others. While Errol was singing “Lean on Me”, Kylie MacGregor and Emmaleigh Levesque were leaning on each other for support.

Immaculate students sign a contract with Greater Sudbury Police recently to always be kind to others and not to get involved with any bullying actions. Cordelia and Riley Brosha, along with Constable Freeman hold the Greater Sudbury Police shirt that was signed by the students.

Immaculate Conception “Green Squad” Enjoying the Fruits of their Labour

Teacher Sara Lotter’s Grade 3 Class at Immaculate Conception is proud to be the 2015-16 Green Squad. The students began in September by harvesting the vegetables in the garden. Some of the beautifully ripened tomatoes were used to make salsa. The salsa was made and enjoyed by Mrs. Hayden and Mrs. Lotter’s classes. The Green Squad has prepared the vegetable beds for winter and they look forward to planting in the Spring.

Indigenous Celebration Held

The Diocesan Centre is planning an inclusive day of celebration based on indigenous culture, and would love a big turn out at this event. All students, staff, families and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend! It looks to be a great day planned!

Fielding Park

5:30 am. Sunrise Ceremony ~

8:00 am. Pancake Breakfast ~

9:00 am. Teaching Carousel – Stations will be set up to be rotated through – 6 stations with 20 minute presentations at each~

a) Children drumming station~

b) Craft – decade of the rosary with four/six colour beads + leather OR~leather bookmark

c) 7 Grandfather teachings

d) Legends – Elders telling the stories~

e) Medicines and Wheel

f) Sacred Elements (fire keeper, tobacco, stones, feather, pipe, drums, smudge, animals) ~

11:00 am. Healing Circle – prayers, scripture (trilingual), blessing~

1:30 pm. Feast – “pot luck”

3:00 pm Travelling Song/Blessing~

Update on Negotiations

You may have heard in the media that the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association ((OECTA), representing elementary, secondary and occasional teachers in our Board voted to approve strike action.

Central bargaining is continuing between the province, unions and the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association (OCSTA), which represents Catholic school boards at the provincial table. At present, we are not aware of any planned labour disruptions by OECTA.

Our Board continues to support efforts to reach a negotiated central settlement as the best way to avoid strikes and other labour disruptions.

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board values all of our teachers as dedicated, caring professionals committed to student success.

We will continue to keep parents, and students informed and to ensure accurate information is fully communicated to the Sudbury Catholic community should there be any developments affecting our schools.
